Only had it two weeks but in that time my ankles have received lots of bites, very itchy so I'm thinking fleas?

When I first collected the car I noticed it smelt a bit when I was washing it, underneath was a horse / farm type smell so I jet washed it all and now it's fine. Previous owner on a V5 suggests it was down a farm lane.

So if they were a farmer / horse rider I think it's likely they came from there?

Can fleas even live in cars?!

Eeek!

Sounds very likely, particularly if the vehicle was used to carry dogs( or cats).

Fleas lay their eggs where dogs and cats lie. In warm conditions they hatch quickly, then (particularly if the original host animal has gone - as in your case) the adult fleas look for something warm to jump to and feed on.

I would give the car a very careful vacuuming (dispose of the bag afterwards, e.g. by burning) then treat with a product that kills flea eggs and larvae, not just the adult insects (e.g. from a specialist pet shop or a vet).

Nasty because the bites can cause allergic reactions and the fleas will spread elsewhere carried on your clothing.

Has been known. You can get flea sprays or powder - put on the carpets and seats, rear seats too. Leave overnight with all windows closed then vacuum out next day to remove as much as possible. May need repeating two weeks later.
Or you could just be the first person to be allergic to a Yeti.Wink

You could also use one of these aircon cleaner aerosols; you basically let it off in the car while the aircon is on with all the doors and windows shut then get out the car, and leave it for ten minutes or so to do its stuff. It may not kill fleas, but is should smell a lot fresher...

It may kill the fleas but probably not the eggs as the car is safe to touch and sit in after use. I got SWMBO's aircon recharged a month ago and it smell like rotten fish, so I used one of those, for a few days one smell was blocking the other but both smells have gone now. Not expensive so worth a try.

Go to the local veterinary. He is likely to sell an over-the-counter remedy for pet fleas in carpets.

You could try one of the flea 'bombs'.  They are designed to work on a whole room, so should do a car interior quite easily.  you just put them the floor, or other flat area, set them off, close the doors & they 'fumigate' the whole car.  I used one in a loft once, after fitting a second hand carpet and it worked a treat.

This is good for killing fleas, eggs and larvae on carpets and pet beds etc.
Found fleas on dog after using a cheap flea collar and used this as a preventative around the home and boot of car.
