Have you thought about gap insurance?

From the moment you drive your car away from the dealer forecourt its value automatically depreciates. This depreciation will increase drastically over the course of you owning that car.
You may not be aware but should the worst happen and your vehicle is stolen or is involved in an accident where it is damaged beyond repair, even if you have fully comprehensive insurance, you will only receive the current market value as a payout from that insurer.

This could result in a shortfall of up to two-thirds of the value of the vehicle in as little as 3 years. Crucially a motor insurance company may not pay enough to settle the outstanding finance on the vehicle.

By purchasing GAP insurance this shortfall can be prevented. A GAP policy covers the difference in price between the initial price paid for a car and the market value payout by your comprehensive insurance company. It therefore ensures that you don't suffer the financial loss otherwise associated with the loss of your car through theft or irreparable damage.

Are you thinking this will never happen to you?.........
UK Car Crime is a third of all crime.
A vehicle is stolen every minute, 33% of these are never recovered.
Cars depreciate by up to 77% over a 3 year period.
Motor insurance settlements are always less than the price you pay for your car.
When a write off occurs you lose out and have to raise the funds for any short fall.
Write offs occur all too often; protect yourself!

Why ALA?

Market Value Clause
Make sure there isn't one! This clause means that the GAP company will only pay from the Glass's Guide Retail value. If your Comprehensive Insurer settles for less, you could well end up with a shortfall. ALA does not have one.

Maximum Value Clause
You don't want one of these either! This means that the value of your car is typically capped at 105% of Glass's Guide Retail value. If you have added some extras, which is very common, these extras may not be covered under your GAP policy. ALA does not have one.

Free Transfer
Of any unused premium and FREE policy amendments. ALA offers this.

Claim Period
If you have ever suffered a Total Loss Claim, you will know the level of stress it can cause, you may even forget to contact the GAP Insurer straight away. The better policies will give you 120 days to make a claim, lesser policies limit this to 30 days. ALAoffers 120 days.

UK Registered Insurers
Buying from a UK insurer means that it is directly authorised and regulated by the FSA, which in turn offers you policy protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, will give you the security you need. Other GAP providers use off-shore insurers, who, although licensed to sell GAP Insurance in the UK, ultimately can step away from their obligations without redress. ALA are UK registered.

Unsure about ALA?
I've had a lot of people ask if this cover is as good as their dealers and if so why is it so cheap. Well to put it bluntly - your dealer is making a lot of money off this product! GAP insurance from ALA is as good as or exceeds many products that your dealer offers. If you want to read up a little more - here is an article from Honest John: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/gap-insurance/what-is-gap-insurance/

Real life testimonial from a customer who made a GAP Insurance claim with ALA Insurance Brokers:

"ALA with my loss were great on the phone and within 3 weeks of notifying them I had a cheque in the post, so I would recommend that you use ALA Insurance Brokers"

If its the same lass she was great - Skoda policy £400 - here £200 with a new for old. No brainer and really professional service. Ring rather than doing it on line - nice to get that personal touch!

After internet researching for comparison between Skoda main dealer GAP quote and other insurance providers offering a similar product settled with ALA for £180 less than quoted by dealer and enhanced level of cover for a vehicle replacement policy.

Contacted ALA to do the deal and spoke direct with very helpful lady, having the human interaction makes all the difference.

Contacted ALA yesterday. Very polite and helpful. There was NO push to buy, nice offer to think about it and call back.Had already made up my mind to purchase anyway, so did.
Cost me £195 for 4 years, which is about half what the dealer quoted for only 3 years.
Just forgot about the 5% discount from this forum.

I also found the very helpful & good value as well, so bought from them.
I suppose the "proof of the pudding" will be revealed when a claim is made & paid out in full & quickly!

Accepting that the 'proof of the pudding' will be in the claiming ( which hopefully won't happen ) I have taken out a GAP policy for 5 years 'new for old' with ALA. This was after a fair bit of online research, where ALA seemed well regarded in the motoring world. Cheaper comparable policies where found which where price matched on the spot, as advertised. This was done by phone with two very polite and helpful people. Initially a young lady named Dawn, followed by a young man, Lee. In the end the policy was some £ 130 cheaper than the Skoda offering for two extra years and new for old. Can't be bad !!

Should anyone be interested
ALA just quoted me
£129.20 for 3 years back to £24179 invoice, at a maximum £15000 GAP (and 'forum123' code works)
However,
If the motor insurer's PAV is less than the GAP insurer's PAV, it is left to the policyholder to argue up the motor insurer's PAV, as it is in the GAP insurer's interest to have as small a gap to bridge. Often, a GAP insurer's PAV will be higher than the motor insurer's.
Still, if you have to finally drop £1000 on the PAV difference, 3 years back to invoice for less than £150 is still something to consider.

Just did the deal with ALA - previously had forgotten the £500 deposit which Dawn at ALA alerted me to.

3 years back to £24679 invoice at maximum GAP of £15000
Used Honest John code HJ16 for 10% discount, so final figure £122.40

I had tyre insurance on my last car but never made a claim, it was too much of a 'faff'. You basically had to ring the insurance company up and get their approval before going to get your tyre sorted, not ideal if you're stuck somewhere with a puncture.

However the GAP Insurance I will be taking out with ALA. Used them in the past and they have been great.
