Engine warning light

A year ago this light lit up on the dash. After a diagnostic test it was resolved to be the glow plugs. I’m told by the mechanic three were changed.
Once more, just last week, the warning re-appeared. This time the test indicated carbon or soot build up in the exhaust. The mechanic switched off the warning light telling me that this may be an intermittent fault, but if it returned to bring in the car for treatment.
Has anyone else experienced this and does a long run to thoroughly heat up the deposits clear it?

He probably meant the EGR valve was getting blocked with carbon deposits, a known issue, possibly more common on cars that have had the dieselgate fix applied. Valve can be removed and cleaned using suitable cleaning compounds and elbow grease. A Regen won't make any noticeable differences once the build up has occurred.
