The original, hugely discredited, official fuel consumption and CO2 type approval tests did not consider NOx a pollutant to worry about.
And apart from government lackeys it is nothing to worry about, being washed out of the atmosphere by rain unlike the main petrol pollutant CO2.

But it's no longer floating about in the atmosphere like CO2.
Not quite true as it is in the water vapour that we all breathe in where it does damage to lung tissue as well as being in rivers, lakes and eventually the sea which is increasingly more acidic. CO2 as a greenhouse gas does damage in other ways so neither of them is desirable if they could be avoided. Not that I am seeking to blame motorists for all the world's pollutents but we should accept some of the responsibility as appropriate, as it's a complex issue.

The average sized domestic central heating system (oil or gas) produces a many times multiple of those from an IC engined vehicle. Not least because the heating is on continuously at this time of year. Governments and city authorities are starting in the wrong place if they want to reduce NOx. Why are NOx levels highest in cities? Because that’s where all the central heating systems are.
