That means that my long ago friend who drove his mini with only a set of mole grips to steer it would be ... (supply your own epithet).
.... Using his own version of tiller controlled steering. And yes - I have actually done that in a mini too! (But not on the public road!).

Reminds me of the later two of my three (in succession) Escort RS2000s. Zero power assistance, combined with a high ratio steering rack that gave only two turns lock to lock. So enabling you to control the sideways travelling angle more adeptly with opposite lock that could be "wound off" fast enough to prevent fishtailing. While at low speeds gave rise to well developed biceps and no need to visit a gym.

Do you remember (older members only perhaps) the "sex education" you got at school?
Or in the case of a rural village school, or even secondary school in a farming dominated area west of the Pennines - refer to what the cows/bulls or sheep/tups do! For the few students who did not already come from or had grown up on livestock farms, observing nature, the playground chatter soon filled in the gaps. Assisted at primary school by "you show me yours and I'll show you mine" games behind the bike shed.

While later discovering "how girls actually worked?", as Guy Martin succinctly puts it, was reserved for sessions in the back of a mate's Morris 1000 van in the car park at a Young Farmers Club dance. One enterprising member used to rent out time in his van by the hour. Which paid for the matrass and blankets thoughtfully provided in there.

This is the "Technical" section of the forum after all, is it not?

When I was taking 'O'' level biology at the next door girl's school, six of us lads were at the back of a class of 30 girls. The teacher, Miss Taylor, blushed when she told us about the reproduction system of a rabbit. The only sexy stuff was in the latest James Bond book, which was passed around between boys and we giggled at page 323 in the acoustics section of our physics book detailing Kundt's tube. The only nudity was in Health and Efficiency, with carefully-placed beach balls and hands. Even Mayfair and Playboy used the airbrush to hide the details, which were only revealed to us when we finally 'went all the way'. It's not surprising that John Ruskin was revolted by his wife's pubic hair! Sad, really.

Too true! It's a leaf I need to put in my book.
I was brought up on the premise that "it is better to be quiet and be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all possibility of doubt.
 Both a fool in my book.;);)

Do you remember (older members only perhaps) the "sex education" you got at school? I always felt that this was an attempt to stop too much fiddling about by showing how much could become disarranged by doing so. Never stopped me, but I wouldn't fiddle with a "clockspring".
Don't want to get saddled with lots if slippery greasy ribbon cables.
Im 64 and i never had any sex education at school :rolleyes: not in class anyway.

I went to a naval college, where sex education was not taught.
I went to Pre-sea College, we didn't get sex education there either, but I could row and command a whale boat after launching it from davits, gave me a strong right arm.

Another in his 60's who got no sex education at school, but learnt lots of "useful" things around the back of the Youth Club or in the near=by park in Haverfordwest. Happy to admit that I had great fun when I left home and went to college in Liverpool.

And you don't need a Moggie van, you can do it quite enjoyably in the back of a Minor saloon!

We bought our first house in 1976 a couple of months before we got married and my mother could not accept that we could possibly be living together so we had to keep a slept in single bed in the spare bedroom for when she visited.

The image of a clock spring reminds me of my old alarm clock, that was a wind up and don't loose the key.
