Hello, I’m sorry if this was mentioned in threads before. I have YETI 1.6 Greenline from 2011 with start/stop system. I recently had to change battery. I read forums and it’s said that I need to register battery in a car system. I called garage to hear that this is not needed for a car this age. Who’s having right?

I had the same question a few years ago with my own 1.6 Greenline (2012) and it turned out that cars of that age with S/S should have the battery coded for full compatibility. Coded batteries though are more difficult to obtain and in any case the previous owner had a regular SLA battery fitted by his garage. As this had lasted for quite a few years, when I came to need a new battery I fitted the same Bosch model. This worked perfectly for the next 4 years until the car got written off, though the S/S would only work in the summer after along run because it was not the correct type of battery for it to operate correctly. This never bothered me because I always turned off S/S anyhow.

If you've fitted a correct battery type, but this has not been coded to the car I can't see any real problem. Even with very different requirements the regular SLA fitted to my car never over or under charged regardless of temperature.

I tried to start a thread with BEM codes but no one joined in, here is the one I started it with, It is the battery for a 2.0 diesel. If you have a battery with a BEM sticker attached and you replace with a similar item just change the last digit.
The idea is that the ecu knows the type and age of the battery and adjusts the charging to lengthen the life of the battery, more relevant with a stop start vehicle.
