Dear Community Members,

We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform! We’ve worked hard over the last several months with a leading design and product firm to deliver a cleaner, faster and more engaging experience for you. Our goal is to provide modern design and technology to make the site run faster, smoother and more reliably. All of the valuable content within the community is still here, even though the layout may look different.

A Consistent Experience Across All Devices
The site is optimized for all screen sizes, including mobile. All features are available and ready to use on all devices.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Your home page now features the most active forums, trending discussions, featured showcases, and top contributing members. This will help keep you up to date on what’s happening in your community and eventually become a very personalized experience for our members with all the great content you love surfaced effortlessly for you.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, that will help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Easy to Use and Navigate
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

You can also navigate by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Clicking on your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations – Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase – Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
These are just a few of the great new functions and features to try on the site. Take a tour and look around! If you have any questions, please check out the HELP section for some quick FAQs about the new platform - Help Section

Please let us know what you think about the new experience. Your feedback is important to us.

Thank you all for your support during this amazing journey!

Hello!
I will be here today as we begin to unpack from the move to this new software update. You may have a lot of questions or comments, or may need help orienting yourself to some of the things that look different around here. I hope I can help with that orienteering, and I hope I can help you feel comfortable navigating around.

My name is Gerrit, and helping people orient themselves as long as I can remember. I was born in Europe, raised throughout parts of the US, and now am in Canada with the Vertical Scope HQ. Orienteering has been something I’ve done for most of my life, and was both the first merit badge earned, and the first one I taught within the Boy Scouts (yes I did that whole thing too). Quickly and accurately finding my way around is such a cornerstone of my life that my first tattoo naturally had to be a compass to help me navigate. (Though I did leave it up to the artist to make it less basic that something that looked like it’d need some sort of seasonal coffee drink) and it is all of these skills that I hope to bring here to you now.

Orienteering is never an easy skill, but with me as your guide through the site I hope that we can explore this brave new look for the site together. I won’t always have an immediate answer to your question, but I will work to find you the most accurate information together.

Please don't be afraid to explore and test out things to see how they work on the site. You can also see our FAQs here!

Although you can certainly use the "insert image" icon to upload an image to your post, you can also just drag and drop it to the text editor or even copy/paste it into there!

You can easily share videos just by adding the URL directly into the text editor!

Gif links from sites like giphy.com will display automatically just by adding the gif URL directly in the text editor. Try it!

I am also a huge fan of the dark mode for the community, it’s much easier on the eyes. What is your favorite feature?

I will be here to answer questions and to help you navigate, as needed.

Hi Gerrit,

Good work with setting up the new site. Must be a huge relief to get it up and running after all the prep work.
Liking what I see so far. Still getting used to the features obviously. The improved speed of loading threads is very noticeable, and welcome. Great stuff.

The (New) Button seems to work quite intuitively and delivers more or less what expected. The key hints and new features you’ve listed in this thread will be useful. Starting to work my way through those now....

Will definitely be exploring the Dark feature later this eve. (22:00 here in UK as I write.)
Ironic that in this forum we often refer to a rival Skoda forum as “The Dark Side”.:);)

I know another Canadian Gerrit - a work colleague at a partner company we used to work with in real life. He’s a cattle geneticist with the Canadian Dairy Network in Guelph. An all round good guy. (y)
I was working with another Canadian last week, while he was in UK. A guy called Bart from Saskatoon. Proper Western Canadian cattle man. Tall, lean, moustached, deep laconic voice and complete with bootlace tie and Stetson.
I also have a number of Canadian relatives spread around Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC and even Victoria. Lived and worked in Sask myself for two years back in the mid-1970s.
A bit chilly there at the moment....🥶

Not sure if you realise, but a lot on here are of the elder side of "21" and if anything like me, when i was in skool the only help we had was a "slide rule" and computers came 40 years later.
i hope we all can adapt to the "new" layout

Ha, i got a load of points from somewhere for doing something!:):):)
Smilies are there (y)(y)(y)(y)(y) now easy
And EDIT is top rh with the 3 dots:geek:

Huge thanks to everyone involved in setting up the new site. It's looking good (y)

When I logged on last night, I was unable to do anything except "like" Urrell's first post. I couldn't start a new post or reply to an existing post; the on-screen click boxes froze; the three dot navigation button froze, my signature had disappeared... not a good start! Fortunately by this morning, everything had sorted itself out.

So I'm left wondering... was there a glitch on the site last night? Or was it the effect of the Old Speckled Hen I was drinking at the time? Seriously though - the more I use the new site, the more I like it.

One question please (and I'm probably showing my age here) - what is a "push" notification? Thanks.

How do you go to " view next unread reply"?

Graham - also try clicking on the "new" symbol (top right) then clicking on the time of an individual post (e.g. 'a moment ago'...'10 minutes ago'... etc.)

Thanks to VerticalScope for the work on the new platform. Looks clean and modern and I am sure people will find their way around once they get used to it and good to have Admin support available.

I like the dark option, especially on a phone/tablet as to my mind it helps save battery but that may be a myth.

This morning speed is poor at loading new posts but that may be because of background maintenance on the database so will keep an eye on it later.

Couple of things already noticed that are "new" restrictions.
  1. Can't see how to change post text colour (or color) as we could on the old platform but the addition of images is a much better process. Will try posting a copy from another website which was a function that wasn't possible on the last platform but had been on our original so many posts got corrupted in the last transfer.
  2. Noticed in Profile that there is a restriction on Location that has to be a City or Country and this has a field verification check. Quite a few members use other terms like UK county name or region which will not pass the verification so is rejected. Seems unnecessarily strict.

Only just logged on and things look quite uncluttered, funny how hings go in circles. Once all TV's were black, all cars were silver, and all websites had pop up windows and animations allover the place, now less is more.

As I tend to read every post I am trying to find the equivalent of the old new posts button, so far I get a list at the bottom of the screen (why not the top?) and returning to the list is rather circuitous.

Also just noticed I only have half an avatar

Likely that there is some limit to the size of an avatar but nothing in FAQ to say what it is. Perhaps it is smaller than it was on the old forum.

The old one was 140 x 140 Pixels and adjusted to a rectangle, the new one actually appears to occupy more screen space but does not accommodate a rectangle.

My avatar shows as being 100 x 100 pixels so maybe the max size is now smaller than before.

Thanks Cricket but mine seems to display properly (it's a very simple image), it's the Hood and Bryetian that are reporting that their's are truncated from their original. As The Hood's is 140 X 140 pixels why isn't it showing in full? Is it a rectangle cropped to a square?

The system uses a square but the edges are rounded. I have been uploading a square at least 400x400 for admin avatars.
