Awning ideas - What do you have, what are the options?

As above please, been looking at the bolt on awnings and wanted to get some ideas if possible. I have the OEM Yeti roof bars if it makes any difference. Can't decide whether a bolt on 'air awning' (is that what they're called?) would be worth getting over one of the universal awnings like the Kelty ones available (waypoint / highroad etc).

Ideas and photos welcome, thanks!

Maybe I don't mean air awning, you know the ones which are basically a flat pack roll that attach to the side of the rack then just unroll and prop up with two poles, those ones. Not actually sure what the specific name for them is.

Do you mean a retractable awning like one of these?

Not sure I recall any other member reporting using one quite like this but some have used an awning over the rear hatch, though it wasn't retractable so would have been erected each time it was needed.

Yes that's the one. I've seen a Yeti with a TENTBOX one which looks pretty good. I have also seen THULE ones (pricey) and the ARB ones look good but they don't have an aluminum case rather a PVC one so don't quite look as tidy when not in use.

The Amazon one seems to store in a waterproof bag on the roof bar but here is another selection, some aluminium storage. Hopefully you have found this selection already.

The Awning is 2M wide x 2.5M long. It's a decent size. Looks fairly large mounted on the side of the vehicle but mainly becuase mine is mounted quite high. I may buy a front runner rack and mount it the side long term, and fit some kind of bracket to raise it during use so it doesn't look like some kind of electricians van with a conduit container mounted on the side! :p

Hahaha (although a conduit container might make the yeti look more stealthy:p It looks interesting because it can slide away like that. So the height of the tent at the car side is the reason to jack it up that high right? I was looking at the sizes on the ARB website to see the height of the canvas. Thanks for posting your quest - it gave me more to research for my own yeti:D I even looked at the Thule folding low tent that is tow bar mounted....

Hey no problem. Yes having it mounted higher gives more head height when inside the tent and I can actually stand up fully near the side with the poles (I am 6' 3'' for reference) so plenty of space and height inside! I looked at the Thule version but it is over £500 including the installation brackets, too much money for what is essentially the same thing. Also the colour of the ARB awning is more 'overland' imo whereas the Thule version is more 'caravan park' haha...
