DSG Query

My new DSG Yeti is the 7 speed box. I have a question about it, just to check that it is OK.
When driving at around 30 MPH, it goes up into 6th or sometimes 7th gear (this is with my foot lightly on the pedal to maintain that speed. However, it sounds like it is labouring the engine and requires a firm press on the pedal to drop a gear and speed up, which then sends the car over the 30MPH limit!

Is this to be expected, to save fuel? This is just in the normal D mode.

I try to get it to hold 5th gear at that speed and it seems to be okay, but the more lightly i press on the pedal to stick to the speed limit, the more likely it seems to change up.

I have the same engine, dsg. The gearbox is set up to move to 7th gear as soon as it can for economy reasons and mine sits there in 7th at 30 mph or so. If it seems laboured, is your mileage less than say 2500 miles? It may that the engine is still a bit tight.

Another issue might be the gearbox itself. I found that the car was poor at pulling away from a roundabout or bend in the road and it felt quite lethargic (and frustrating too). I had the garage remap the gearbox settings and that seems to have resolved the problem.

It has done 21k miles. It feels fine in 5th at 30, but as soon as it changes up to 6th, you can feel the engine labouring. I have only had it for 4 days, so I guess i may still be getting used to it? It pulls fine in 5th and below at low speeds to be honest, just 6th and above.

I think it may be your driving technique rather than a fault with the gearbox. If you think about your previous manual Yeti, when it was moving without much effort (around 1500 rpm) it would signal to change up a gear. If you were to accelerate even very gently or start to go up a gradient it would stop indicating to change up. The DSG probably works the same way, so when you are being too gentle with the accelerator (trying to drive on fumes) it thinks it is time to change up, but if there is anything that puts a little more strain on the engine it does not have the power to maintain its current speed. It is a small engine in a big heavy body and a bit of vehicle sympathy is needed.

So what is the way around this? If i press lightly on the accelerator pedal, it changes up to 6th at 30 on its own and feels like it is labouring the engine.
I want to maintain a healthy engine sound whilst sticking to the 30MPH speed limit! I really do not like going over that limit in urban areas.

Hi Gman did I miss a post from you about changing your Yeti? Was it much hassle to do it? Our diesel Yeti has 6 gears and on the flat is often in 6th at 1200 rpm. I trust the software designers to have got it right but I've never noticed the engine labouring although it is a Diesel. I use manual mode occasionally e.g. If I notice an interrupted regen the next time I go out I hold in a lower gear. Also it's fun to go in manual for a drive but overall the DSG is brilliant and I'd never go back to a manual.
