Maybe an idea to find a post 2012 tsi engine from a crashed vehicle to replace yours, but won’t be cheap with fitting, perhaps £1500.Which is just what you don’t want to hear I guess!

Skoda Yeti SE Plus

Just to let everyone know - after quite a wait I finally wrote to the CEO I mentioned the article in the German Magazine and also the fact that quite a few people had reported problems with their Timing Chains ( perhaps not a good idea ) but interestingly the response was:
"The vehicle in question was built for the UK, so any literature based on other countries findings, or internet forums cannot be taken into account, as this is not relevant against a UK vehicle, and purely peoples opinions"

Thanks to everyone for your replies and support- really good forum ( despite what Skoda say!! )

Sue, if only we could trust your chain, you could grab your passport and a toothbrush, head to Dover, then ferry to Calais, drive a few hundred miles to here where I live. Book yourself into a hotel for one day. The auto mechanic with his own workshop here would supply and fit the VW updated strengthened timing chain plus a new water pump for you for a couple of hundred quid.

I know, because three weeks ago he did it for me...

You'd have a great road trip and see some beautiful mountains here too. Cigs and booze are dirt cheap here and there are no limits to what you can take back to Blighty (within reason).

If only we could trust your chain.

Should I buy a 2010 Skoda Yeti?

Hi I am new to this thread and was considering buying a used 2010 Skoda Yeti from a private seller. They have been upfront and asked if I was aware of the timing chain problems? He has had a new one fitted. And says the car runs well now. It looks great from the photo’s! My question is after reading all the above posts is it a good car to buy? Is something else major likely to go wrong with this make and model?
Thank you in advance
Jeanette

I presume you are meaning petrol engines and timing chain issues which like the comments on the forum regarding leaking sunroofs needs to be taken in context. 2011 and earlier high mileage possibly avoid because of this but tensioners and chains were improved on later models of the CZBZ engine. Listen for any signs of rattle on start-up.
If the comment was regarding performance then you haven't driven one yet so maybe you should to put your mind at rest.

If the chain has been replaced by the updated version before the engine suffered any damage it could be a good buy

As The Hood has explained before, even the early 1.2 timing chains were a problem in a small proportion of cases, because VW forced the chain manufacturer so hard on price. The chain manufacturer had to extend the planned life of the production dies to double their original expectancy. With the effect that towards the end of a run, some of the parts were slightly out of tolerance. Which reduced their effective life and made them prone to rattle. Engines that used a chain from early in each production batch would be just fine. While everything remained within tolerance.

There can't be many 1.2's left now that had a duff chain fitted on the assembly line. Those that are left must have had an in-tolerance chain, by dint of the fact they have survived.

Later 1.2 engines (post-2014 was it?) were a very different design and had a timing belt, rather than a chain. Just the normal belt life questions with those.

All the 1.2 TSi Yetis were turbocharged. Which gives them a performance equivalency closer to a 1.8 or 2-litre naturally aspirated motor. Not like the 69bhp 1.2 natural motor in both the Fiat 500 and Ford KA "on my drive".

Sometime 2015 on the 1.2TSi.
