How old is the car and what engine does it have?
What was the car taken to the garage for in the first place?
Have you phoned the people you got the guarantee from to see what they say and the way to proceed?

The older 1.2 had mods to either the chain or tensioner, the others have a belt.
The 1.8tsi also had a chain. There have been reports of 2010 models having problems with stretched timing chain but I don't recall anything similar on later models. The change to a belt took place with the update in 2013.

my yeti was registered in 2011 apparently. i am very upset about this i have only done 14k miles on it and this timing thing is making a noice. i am taking it back to skoda..its notunder guarantee but this seems for a big fault to appear..and its going to be expensive..the aa have told me to take it to skoda which i am doing tomorrow. has anyone dealt with such a large expensive fault on a newish car with skoda.

i bought it from car giant its registerd in 2011 NS I DONT HAVE THE GUARANTEE THING. so the aa have suggested i take it to skoda. however the garage who were changing my tyres for new ones picked up the noise and diagnosed the faults. and he said that the yeti had been recalled have you heard of this ????

The only Skoda recall in the UK involving the Yeti according to the DVSA was for common rail diesels and involved the high pressure pipes, nothing to do with the timing chain or tensioner. There were recalls in China and Australia that were to do with the DSG gearbox in 2012. There are some checks and refits that may be done as part of the regular service rather than under a recall but I don't remember anyone mentioning anything involving the timing chain.
Honest John lists problems reported to him by vehicle and if you look at the Yeti review there is one other report of a timing chain/tensioner problem. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/skoda/yeti-2009/?section=good

There have been no Safety Recalls on the DVSA system for any Yeti's.
There have been no Skoda letters to owners asking them to take any Yeti's in to dealers for any rectification work outside of the normal service schedule.
There have been a few Technical Bulletins issued where dealers have had to do work on specified chassis numbers whilst they have been in for service.

Claire in answer to your question, yes...the problem may become quite serious if nothing is done. There have been no recalls over this issue so you would be best to contact a Skoda dealers service centre and give them the vehicles VIN number. They can enter it onto the computer and tell you what corrections the vehicle will need to have done.
I recently had my vehicle at a dealers and they informed me of some updated/additional parts that needed to be be fitted/updated. That was a complete surprise for me. I suspect that your vehicle may also need some updates done that can only be performed at a Skoda dealers service centre. A local garage probably doesn't have the facilities and/or knowledge to deal with all the issues involved.
Good luck and please let us know how things go for you.

In relation to the timing chain issues previously mentioned, early model 1.2 TSI engines had a problem with timing chains stretching and becoming loose, and then thrashing themselves against the guide rails. There were no vehicle recalls over this issue but owners who had the problem (excessive idle noises) were having their engines' timing chain and/or guide rails replaced. The problem only occurred in vehicles built before late October 2011 when an updated timing chain and sprocket were fitted. The guide rails were updated from early November 2011.
The 1.8 TSI engines have had several updates to their timing parts. They have had less publicised problems with earlier timing chains slipping cogs on the camshaft sprocket due to chain tensioner failures, and causing valve to piston clashes.
The older 1.2 TSI (CBZB), 1.4 TSI (CAXA), and the 1.8 TSI (CDAA, CDAB) motors were all fitted with timing chains.
Timing belts have been used for the newer 1.2 TSI (CYVB), 1.4 TSI (CZCA, CZDA), and, 1.6 TSI (CWVA) model engines.

Sorry if off at a tangent here...
NEVER BUY A CAR FROM CAR GIANT.

They buy the cars at auction that the franchised dealer's won't touch.
Usually because they're lemons or have been in accidents or somesuch.

I know people who have worked there and they say pretty much every car they sell has some "story" behind it that you wouldn't really want to know about as a buyer...
