Sorry but I am a bit confused as to what head unit is fitted as you mention Kenwood/Garmin and then Bolero/Amundsen but these are different units. The Kenwood DNX525, IIRC, was offered by Skoda dealers as a replacement for the OEM head units which were Bolero or Amundsen. The Bolero had no Sat Nav and there were three variants of the Amundsen fitted to the yeti over the years.
If it's the Kenwood then presume you are looking on the Garmin site for the map updates rather than the Skoda Update Portal which works only for the Amundsen II head units. The Garmin site doesn't mention anything about a specific type of SD card so unsure why Skoda mentioned this. Am I missing something?

Garmin. The Skoda dealer told me Bolero and Admunsen are the same company and said told me
the SD card should be compatable with either of those? I am totally confused to be quite honest!

 

I think this is another dealer talking out of his arse.
The Kenwood DNX516 DABS is not an Amundsen II and that is the only one to be able to get map updates off the Skoda Portal.
Yours is not the same as an Amundsen at all.
Bolero is the same unit as Amundsen without sat-nav but the Kenwood will need updating elsewhere.

I cannot see Skoda being willing or able to help updating another make of unit.
If it was a Skoda system they will not update from a blank SD card, it has to be the genuine Skoda Map card.

Thanks for your help. Yes I can see your point that Skoda will not be wlling to help update another make of sat nav even though we purchased and had it installed by them. I have spoken to Kenwood/Garmin and they referred me back to Skoda? I may phone another dealer to see if they are more helpful!

As far as I know none of the Sat Navs prompt for an update though on some like TomTom you may receive an email, if you registered, to say a new map update is available. Never had a Garmin so can't say if they would do the same.

Given the dealer confused a Kenwood with an Amundsen and seemed to have confused matters I am not sure I would accept what they say without question. Did they mean software updates or map updates?

Not sure that many members have the Kenwood unit fitted so unless someone has and can advise on the update process they have used we are all a bit in the dark.

 

I use the TomTom app and there is no notification of map updates unless you actually look for it. They have ruined the app and where I used to swear by it, now I swear at it and would no longer recommend it. I also have a standalone Garmin sat nav and there are no email alerts for that either.

 

I get an email from TomTom for a stand-alone unit I have but to be honest haven't had one for a while so maybe the "lifetime" updates has expired. The phone app maps don't all have the map data on the phone anyway so you get the updates without realising it.

It is not possible for the inbuilt units to warn that you need an update because they have no way of connecting to the map supplier to know that a later version is available, its just up to the owner to check. There must be a way with the Kenwood to get a screen giving the map version/date same as their is for the Amundsen which would say whether it has updated or not. With the Amundsen you cannot update a new SD card you have to update the original but I don't know if the same is true of the Kenwood.

 

The Kenwood DNX 516DAB spec says it inludes Android Auto ot Apple Car Play so if all else fails you can use this connected to a smart phone for naviation then as above maps will be up to date.

 

Garmin send me 3 or 4 up-date reminders a year.

I get none and see no method of how to be advised when updates are available.

It is difficult to tell whether the map data you are using is the latest without either driving some where with a very new road or looking at the units system settings. Not storing Recent places entered may not be a map data issue.

 

My Garmin is also "registered" but I don't get any email notifications, with the TomTom app, minor updates are automatically installed, but with maps there is no notification and you have to go to the settings, maps installed area to find out.

My Garmin is registered and should have updates for "life" but email notifications stopped some time ago. The Garmin unit dates back to 2008.

So did mine - mine was, no both are, top of the range quality models.

 

Just checked and mine's a Nuvi 2545ML.

It was a common acronym invented by American GI's in Europe during WW2. When advance units were asked to provide regular Situation Reports or "SitReps" to HQ. The regular response would be: "Situation normal - FUBAR". Or "F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition" as Robjon said. I didn't realise Ruari had led such a sheltered life? Did the Merchant Navy not use the same acronym to describe situations?

A bit like a Peugeot 106 rally car I was co-driving one time, in the early 2000s, after we end-over end rolled it multiple times down a very steep, rocky hillside near Minehead in Somerset. Leaving it parked upside down against a rather stout tree, with a wheelbase at least two feet shorter on one side than the other and the remains of the rear hatch squished against the back of my seat. Some 20-30m off the forest track we had left, travelling backwards at around 60-70mph. ("Knowle" stage for those that know it. Bryetian may be familiar for 4x4 Off-road comps?). The winch recovery Unimog that came later to extract it took one look and remarked: "That's properly FUBAR'd then! Gonna take more than one can of T-Cut to polish out!" I could only agree. It was however back for the next championship event a month later - with a fresh bodyshell and a number of other parts. Same engine and gearbox. A bit like "Trigger's Broom".

Recalling the incident just now, I've reminded myself of competing on the same stage with different drivers and cars and different years, that I've also recorded:

• A half roll and parked on it side in an Escort Mk2 BDA,
• off-road down a (nearby) bank and parked 6 feet in the air in some tree branches in a Mitsubishi EVO V,
• 2nd fastest overall stage time in a MG Metro 6R4 (same driver as the Escort, different year),
• plus many other decent times in various other Peugeots and the odd Vauxhall Astra GTE.

A very technical and challenging stage, that rewards a small error with a big off, but also very satisfying when you and your driver get it right.

 

Mine is a 3598LM but I rarely use it.
